Comments page: N1 Bible version test

If a test sentence does not make sense to you, just answer with something like "meaningless" or "not good English or "doesn't sound like English as I speak it." Please do not try to make sense of something which does not sound like good English to you.

1. If you heard the sentence, "They were baptized into Moses
in the cloud and in the sea," what meaning, if any, would the
words "They were baptized into Moses" have to you?

2. Consider the sentence: "God was not pleased with the people,
so they were cut down in the wilderness." What does it
sound like happened to the people?

3. Consider the sentence: "Whoever has an offering must
present it for its acceptance before the Lord." If the sentence
tells us, why was an offering to be presented?

4. If you had an answer for #3, what other wording for the test
sentence can you think of that might say the same thing more
clearly to more people?

5. Consider the sentence: "Tomorrow I will wash the car or
clean my office?" How many different actions does it sound like
are being contemplated?

6. Consider this sentence: "I will not break my covenant or go
back on what I promised." How many different actions does it
sound like are being contemplated?

7. Consider these two sentences: "You place me in the lowest
regions of the pit, in the dark places, in the watery depths. Your
anger bears down on me, and you overwhelm me with all your
waves." What does it sound like is being referred to here by
the word "waves"?

8. Consider this sentence: "Christ has broken the power of
death and brought life and immortality to light through the
gospel." Based only on the words of this sentence, how many
things does it sound like Christ brought to light?

9. Consider this prayer: "Make us happy in proportion to the
days you have afflicted us." If it sounds like there is a
connection here between happiness and the affliction referred
to, explain it in your own words.

10. Consider the following sentences: "But you are not in the
darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would. For you
all are sons of the light and sons of the day. We are not of the
night nor of the darkness." What do you think might be the
meaning of the words "sons of the day"?

11. Do you think that most speakers of standard dialects of
English today understand what the phrase "sons of the day"
means?

12. If your answer to #11 is no, how might English Bible versions
enable their readers to understand the meaning of "sons of the day"?

13. Optional: What is your name?

14. Optional: What is your email address?
